Cosmetic medicine involves non-surgical medical treatments aimed at improving the appearance of the skin and other aesthetic concerns. These treatments are designed to address issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and volume loss.

Common procedures in cosmetic medicine include:

  • Botulinum toxin injections: Temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. [1]
  • Dermal fillers: Restore volume to areas such as the cheeks and lips. [2]
  • Energy-based treatments: Utilize focused energy to tighten skin and improve its appearance. [3]
  • Laser treatments: Address skin by removing outer layers, pigmentation, or scars. [4]

Benefits and Risks

Cosmetic medical treatments can offer potential aesthetic benefits by enhancing facial features and addressing signs of aging. [5] However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks. These may include temporary swelling, bruising, or discomfort at the treatment site, and in rare cases, severe complications such as infection, loss of sight, and/or allergic reactions. [6] [7-8]

Cosmetic treatments should only be performed by qualified medical practitioners in accordance with established safety standards. Patients are advised to discuss these risks with their doctor before undergoing any treatment to make informed decisions.
